No one likes wasting money, and when it comes to SaaS negotiations, knowing the inside scoop on the vendor you’re talking to can ensure you get the best deal possible. With that in mind, it’s time for another edition of Sastrify’s tool renewals blog series!
Over the past few months, our procurement experts have been sharing advice for SaaS buyers to get the best contract terms during subscription renewal negotiations. So far, we’ve brought you exclusive subscription management and renewal tips for tools like HubSpot, Salesforce, Twilio Segment, Datadog, Tableau, Zendesk, DocuSign, and Mixpanel, with more on the way.
(If you prefer to hand the negotiating over to a team of experts so you can focus on your core work, Sastrify is ready to help.)
Now, let’s talk about Auth0.
What is Auth0?
Auth0, owned by Okta, is an adaptable user authentication and authorization server browser covering use cases from “SSO to MFA, passwordless to user profiling, and consumer to saas apps.” Auth0 focuses on customer IAM (Identity Access Management) while the Okta product is focused on IAM for employees.
Alternatives to the Auth0 authorization server include OneLogin, LoginRadius, and PingIdentity.
Top tips for Auth0 renewals
Below are our top 7 tips to get the best deal on Auth0, whether you’re negotiating a renewal contract or starting with the tool for the first time.
1. Get the best Auth0 discounts at fiscal year-end or end-of-quarter
Auth0 is similar to most SaaS vendors in terms of timing: choosing the right time for your contract negotiations and signing is key to getting the best price. You’re more likely to get a discount from your Auth0 rep as the company nears the end of their fiscal year (December 31st) or the end of each quarter (March 31st, June 30th, September 30th).
These times are when Auth0 sales reps are working to hit their targets, giving you the opportunity to achieve a better deal if you complete the signing close to those dates.
2. Select the right Auth0 plan for your business needs
When choosing an Auth0 plan, you should of course go with the one that matches your business needs. However, we recommend staying on the Professional plan as long as possible, since the Enterprise plan leads to a large jump in price.
Note that there is an automatic upgrade to the Enterprise plan if you complete the threshold of 10,000 Monthly Active Users (MAUs) per month – and this can lead to your price increasing by 5x.
3. Negotiate your pricing model for Enterprise Connections
Another component that can save you money is to negotiate for unlimited Enterprise Connections vs. pay per Enterprise Connections. When you pay for each one, the cost can be enabled quickly, and an Unlimited allowance gives you room to grow as needed.
4. Get extra discounts on Auth0 for longer commitment periods
As is the case with many SaaS companies, a longer contract commitment can translate to higher discounts. (This is especially true during a downturn when SaaS companies are worried about churn and more willing to reward commitment.)
With Auth0, multi-year contracts are generated. Be sure to ask for a ramp-up plan to ensure you get the best deal if your MAUs grow over time.
5. Bundle Auth0 and Okta for better offers
As mentioned above, the Auth0 browser is owned by Okta (acquired in 2021), and you can take advantage of this in your negotiations. They have attractive commercial offers if you bundle both products, so be sure to mention if you are interested in both.
6. Consider buying Auth0 through a marketplace
Another option to obtain the Auth0 browser is to use a marketplace. For instance, Auth0 software products are available through the AWS marketplace, and buying them through that platform can lead to an additional 1% discount in AWS credits.
7. Compare your MTU price to benchmarks
As part of your negotiation process, it’s good to compare your quote to benchmarks from other companies – that way you know if you should push for more or if you’re getting a good price. We recommend calculating your per MAU price and using that for the comparison.
